When singers over sing, they normally lack proper technique.  In addition, some singers think that the rougher the sound, the better the music.  Truth be told, a good performance is one that is always wanted.  So, be sure to carefully choose music within your ability.  That will ensure you always give your best and leave your audience wanting more.  Now, there's nothing wrong with challenging yourself with a more difficult piece.  A difficult piece means more preparation and time for you to master it accordingly.  The more natural the music sounds, the better your performance will be.  A natural sound normally means a great level of comfort.  You can paint a better picture with the lyrics and melody.  Also, you can make a deeper connection with your audience and make them feel like that performance was for each individual out there.  The trick is to master proper technique and your unique sound.  Once that's done, you're right in that pocket where you need to be.  Over singing can end your singing career before you know it and cause irreversible damage.  So, always exercise proper technique, focus on being comfortable, and always strive to get your most natural sound!
