As a singer, some of your most valuable assets are pitch and tone. I love them both! Pitch is that individual sound your vocal chords produce. It’s your version of your voice! This let’s your audience experience your authentic you! If your pitch is still unclear to you, don’t fret. You can find it because you have it! Relax, breathe, and hum. Don’t hum to hit a particular note, just hum. Now, actually say and draw out the word hum. Guess what? That’s your pitch. (not referring to pitch in terms of hitting the right note) Moving on to tone, that’s the color of that sound. Simply put, it’s the quality of what your audience hears. Tone is something that can be worked on and improved. One of the easiest ways to improve your tone is take care of your voice. Be sure to drink the right fluids, eat the right foods, and breath properly! I’m rooting for you all to be the best singers that you can be, but you also have to take the steps. Whether you’ve bought a product, had a vocal lesson, or read my blog, I’m committed to helping you sound like the best you possible! Improve your voice: http://www.dileesahunter.com/products.html
Finding inspiration to write can be tedious at times. Life is still happening, and it can definitely affect your motivation for creating a beautiful song. Bad moods, disappointing events, death, and so much more happens everyday. So, I’ve learned that sometimes inspiration has to be sparked! Pick up a book or magazines. Someone else’s story or point of view may stir up something in you. Movies have great storylines and music. Take a listen and pay attention. Other creative things can bring out the most creativity in you. Get out of the house! Go to the park, visit a museum, an aquarium, a live music concert.....get outside of your comfort zone. You’ll find something that will send a surge of inspiration through your body. Then, you can create! Getting upset about a writer’s block or lack of inspiration doesn’t solve anything. Wanting change and doing nothing never works! Improve your voice: http://www.dileesahunter.com/products.htmlPhoto credit: Spark

There’s a misconception in the world of independent artists. Everyone thinks that investing in your craft means getting a quality product=not investing money at all! WRONG! Music should be like your baby. Your baby should be an awesome representation of you!
Your music should be the best quality that it CAN be. I’m not saying you have to spend a $1 million for your debut album, but make a conscious investment to put your best foot forward. Write great material. If writing isn’t your craft, you should be working with some writers! Explain your vision....Let them know what kind of message you want to send out. If it’s worth it, be prepared to pay them!
The same goes for producers. Remember you want quality. Do your research. What producers are affordable for you? How do people respond to their audience? Is there chemistry between the two of you? All these answers will help you decide on who to work with and whether or not they’re worth your money.
Mixing, contrary to popular belief, needs to be on point. There’s nothing like an awesome song with a BAD Mix. It’s the worst....lol! Find a good affordable engineer and be ready to give your audience the best sound from you. While we’re on the topic of sound, let’s not forget your vocals. You know if your vocals need work! Be prepared to put in the work. A vocal coach is essential and so is daily practice!
There are many other people that are involved in the creation process, but these are the important ones, in my opinion. So, do your research and get your money’s worth!

As you all know, I’m pregnant with child number 3, and I’m excited to have another addition to the family. We’re all anticipating the day for her arrival. So, with that, my recent trip to Portugal gave me an opportunity to work with a great vocalist who’s a mother. I relate to mothers on many different levels, especially vocally! Everyday, I feel the effects of the baby on my voice. When we sing, we must have the proper breath support. Imagine trying to breathe correctly with a little one expanding inside of you...lol! It’s INSANE! It takes more energy to support the notes with this added abdominal weight. And I realize that, as exhausting as it is, I have to practice singing more so that I continuously work those muscles out. If you’re feeling this way, then it’s time for you to get back in the game. Whether you’re pregnant or already had the baby, you have to get your voice back in shape! I know it’s difficult. You work, already have kids, don’t have much time, etc....but I can help you make time. I love designing vocal maps that guide you to your desired vocal destination. We will get there one note at a time. Click the link below & let’s get to work! Book your lessons: http://www.dileesahunter.com/voice-lessons.html
This is a million dollar question that many artists face. How do you hire a vocal coach? What credentials should they have? How should the lessons go? I could keep going with the various questions I hear. So, I want to help each one of you choose a vocal coach, even if it’s not me.
You want a coach that can sing. They don’t have to be a Whitney Houston or Barbara Streisand, but at the very least, he or she needs to be able to play or sing (or both) the notes that they’re giving out. In addition, coaches should have knowledge of various vocal techniques, dynamics, terminology.
A vocal coach should know the biology involved with singing. If they think you have more than one set of vocal chords, run fast...lol!
From a business standpoint, he or she should be professional. Also, they should know your voice, communicate in a style that best helps you develop, and work well with your personality. There’s more, but this will help you begin your decision making process.

This is a touchy, difficult topic for most artists. I’m no expert, but this information is based on friends and experiences. If you’ve got some gigs and your career has become a bit much for you to juggle, then it’s time for a manager. You want someone that understands you, your creative process, your goals, and the music industry. That’s basic stuff.
You can do some in depth research on what managers do, but at the basic level, they need to ensure everything is booked accordingly. If you’re traveling, they should ensure all travel arrangements are properly handled. You should have a clearly defined scheduled. Your manager should also be negotiating your booking rates. He/she needs to get you the best pay possible. They should be knowledgeable about what the going rate is for that market.
A manager also needs to be heavily dedicated to your career and pushing you to the next level. This point is huge and important. If your manager has a lot going on & you’re constantly on the back burner, you should move on. On the other hand, if you manager constantly pushes you to greatness and keeps you motivated on those bad days, then you’ve probably got a keeper.
Furthermore, and last point, your manager should let you create, but he/she should push you to create your best work possible. If your manager isn’t speaking to you about vocal lessons or pushing you in that direction, he/she should! Your vocals are just like an instrument. It needs steady tuning and proper care. After all, you should always put your best vocal forward!

Here’s the skinny on people. People buy from people. When fans buy your music, attend a concert, get a t-shirt, it’s because they feel a connection to you! Don’t forget that! You can’t afford to be nasty or spammy. Many artists today are getting the full power of social media. It can take your career to the next level. It can also keep your career in the same spot.
Sending links to people and rubbing your music in their face without them knowing who you are as a person is a waste of time. Don’t be afraid to show you. What’s your favorite cereal? What kind of socks do you like? You’d be surprised at how many fans have the same answer as you. You all can start a dialogue about it, and the bridge is built! That needed connection is there, and you, my friend, have a life long fan!

Study is a word that makes us cringe. We think of piles of books, countless hours, and little to no sleep. Newsflash: In order to become an even better artist, you have to study. The first recommendation is various genres of music. If you only know R&B music, you’re limiting your sound and opportunities. Take some time to listen to country, rock, alternative, etc....There may be a phrase or an arrangement that sparks your interest or gives you new inspiration!
Everyone has a favorite artist(s). Try listening to someone else. Music discovery is crucial. There could be another artist out there that you love and admire. You won’t know until you hear them! So, if you have a favorite soul singer, go listen to other soul singers!
This isn’t the last and final tip to being better, but it’s the last one in this post....lol. If you want to be a chart topper, study the charts. See who’s in the top 10 of the billboard charts. Take a listen to those tracks. What do they have in common? Who produced them? Who wrote them? This will certainly help you know more and make hits of your own! Study, study, study!

Many times, we put ourselves in a box and create our own limitations. We say we can’t sing a song because our voice doesn’t sound right. That type of song is only for an artist who acts like that.
